An air conditioner or heat pump is a system that generates power using the above-described principle. Air conditioners are primarily used for cooling, but sometimes are used for heating. In many air conditioners and heat pumps, the heat transfer between a liquid or a gas and the air causes the liquid or gas to cool, and thus the air to be cooled becomes cooler. In such air conditioners and heat pumps, the heat transfer coefficient between the liquid or gas and the air is called the conduction coefficient, while the reverse heat transfer coefficient between the liquid or gas and the air is called the convection coefficient. When the air conditioner or heat pump utilizes a refrigerant, the flow of refrigerant may be made in a direction opposite to the one that causes the generation of power, that is, in the direction in which the heat is transferred from the liquid to the air. Therefore, when a water pipe or the like is connected to the condenser coil or a heat-transfer tube or the like is connected to the evaporator coil, the water or liquid may flow from the water pipe or the heat-transfer tube, cooling the fluid passing through the water pipe or the heat-transfer tube. Accordingly, an air conditioner or heat pump may be coupled to the fluid side of a water pipe or the like and an air conditioner or heat pump may be coupled to the vapor side of the water pipe or the like. As a result, the fluid side of the water pipe or the like is cooled, while the vapor side of the water pipe or the like is heated. In this case, the heat generated in the evaporator coil in a heating mode is transferred to the refrigerant through the condenser coil, and the hot, low-density refrigerant is vaporized.
